So you have seen that dream job and you know that you have all the qualifications to get it. You just need to get in front of them and they’ll hire you, right? Follow these tips make sure your talents are showcased in a CV that is designed to catch the recruiters eye.
Make your resume creative
Stand out from the crowd with layouts and formatting that convey your individuality and personality. Always use professional fonts but change the font size to draw attention to areas that you want to highlight, such as achievements and successes. Make the structure easy to read and logical, to get your point across quickly.
Make it relevant
Target your CV to the job you are applying for; find key phrases in the job description and incorporate them into your resume. Show that you have experience key to the position that you are applying for. Use examples of how you are well suited to the role, how you have solved problems and added value. Quantify your responsibilities and accomplishments using figures where possible. For example ‘Increased profitability within Department X by X%’. Also consider using numbers to highlight how many staff or what market share you were responsible for.
Make it meaningful
Avoid using meaningless words to pad out your CV; instead use words that say something about what you can bring to the role. Highlight accomplishments and recognition and use examples that illustrate how you have been a leader or team player and how you would fit into that role or company. For example, if you were a keen mountain biker and were applying for a job at a sports clothing distributor, it might be pertinent to mention this as they will know that you have some background in the sector.
Make it correct
Proof read over and over. Whilst a potential employer may forgive one typo, a resume littered with mistakes will quickly find its way to the bin. Your resume reflects who you are as a person, and is a potential employer’s first impression of you; it makes sense that if you submit something that is poor quality, then you can understand why they might draw the same conclusion about you.
State your objective
Describe your objective and show that you have imagined yourself in that role. This will show your drive and determination to succeed.
